TWO BIG INTERNATIONAL RALLIES ON THE SAME DATES: AN INCOMPREHENSIBLE DECISION
How could they have allowed the organization of the Dakar in Morocco from January 9 to 23, while the Africa Eco Race caravan must arrive in Tangier as early as January 20?
The Africa Eco Race has been traveling through our country for 17 years and is currently preparing for its 18th edition. Its organizers have long planned its route, camps, logistics, and mobilization of all necessary people.
The Africa Eco Race was the first to set and announce its schedule in Morocco. Its arrival in Tangier is scheduled for January 20. Administrative and technical checks must then be carried out before the start of the first stage on January 24.
These dates were therefore known and should have been respected.
How could they have allowed this program, and then also grant the Dakar, whose organization in Morocco was decided only very recently, a schedule from January 9 to 23, with a final stage in Marrakech?
The Dakar will still be in progress when the Africa Eco Race caravan arrives in Tangier. It will finish its course the day before the start of the second rally.
This decision will strongly affect the organization of the Africa Eco Race. Many Moroccan professionals usually work on several international rallies. With such a mismatch, they will be forced to choose only one event and will not be able to join Tangier in time to participate in the preparations and checks for the second rally.
This situation will also have significant consequences for Moroccans who want to work on both events. It risks depriving them of part of their work and income opportunities, while a reasonable time gap between the two rallies would allow each to participate in both organizations.
Such a significant mismatch between two major events is hardly understandable and does not respect the usual principles of coordination in the rally-raid field.
Whatever the fame of the Dakar or the number of its participants, its request for authorization should have been studied with the utmost care. A reasonable delay should have been provided between the two rallies, out of respect for the organizer who had announced its dates first, for the Moroccan professionals and for all those already involved in the preparation of the Africa Eco Race.
Personally, I am not at all opposed to the organization of the Dakar in Morocco. Hosting such a large event represents a great honor for our country and an exceptional opportunity to promote its landscapes, regions, and know-how.
However, hosting the Dakar should not lead us to ignore an organization that has been trusted by Morocco for many years and which faithfully returns to it for each edition.
We must also think about the inhabitants of the regions crossed. They must benefit from a minimum of tranquility between the passage of two such important caravans. The various services mobilized also need time to complete their mission on the first event before preparing and accompanying the second.
Morocco is a welcoming country, open to all major international events. But this openness must be accompanied by fair, responsible, and respectful organization of commitments already made.
I therefore ask that this schedule be reviewed and that a reasonable separation be provided between the two events.
Welcome to the Dakar in Morocco, but with respect for the Africa Eco Race, its announced calendar, its organizers, Moroccan professionals, and local populations.
