The Gibraltar Lighthouse at Europa Point is now open to the public with guided tours giving visitors a close-up look at one of the Rock’s most prominent maritime landmarks and its working mechanisms.

The lighthouse is currently open for tours ahead of the official opening ceremony on September 17 when representatives from Trinity House, which has managed the lighthouse since the 19th century, will attend.

From that point, tours will be rolled out more widely, with plans for school programmes, corporate visits and tailored experiences for different groups and, for the first time in decades, the facilities have received an upgrade and renovation with the public in mind.

Admin Comment by Marocatlasgib4x4 Club on April 3, 2025 at 12:20: En exclusiva y por primera vez para un medio de comunicación español, entramos en la cueva secreta de la II Guerra Mundial en Gibraltar.

Había una leyenda urbana que decía que había una cueva secreta dentro del peñón de Gibraltar con una bicicleta para dar corriente eléctrica, y que en caso de que los Nazis invadieran Gibraltar, se quedarían encerrados seis soldados dentro para expiar y retransmitir por radio lo que estaba pasando.

¡Pues los rumores eran ciertos y en 1996 la encontraron después de muchos años buscando!

Esto era algo tan secreto que no había archivos ni registros ni en Inglaterra ni en Gibraltar.

Gracias al Gobierno y al museo de Gibraltar por la oportunidad de poder enseñar algo tan importante.

La Operación Tracer fue una operación militar secreta de la Marina Real Británica durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Gibraltar. El impulso para este plan de permanencia en la zona fue el plan alemán de 1940 para capturar Gibraltar, llamado Operación Félix . La Operación Tracer fue una iniciativa del contralmirante John Henry Godfrey , director de la División de Inteligencia Naval del Almirantazgo.

En 1941, Godfrey decidió establecer en Gibraltar un puesto de observación encubierto que permanecería operativo incluso si Gibraltar cayera en manos de las potencias enemigas.

Los movimientos de los buques enemigos se informarían al Reino Unido . Godfrey solicitó la ayuda de varios consultores para llevar a cabo el plan.

El plan era tan secreto que Godfrey se reunía con sus consultores en su residencia privada en lugar de en Whitehall .

Se decidió construir el puesto utilizando el sistema de túneles.

La batería de artillería estaba ubicada en la cresta superior del Peñón de Gibraltar , cerca del extremo sur de lo que hoy es la Reserva Natural del Peñón Superior .

La construcción comenzó a finales de 1941 y finalizó a finales del verano de 1942. Las cámaras sirvieron como puesto de observación doble, con una rendija que daba a la bahía de Gibraltar y una abertura más grande al mar Mediterráneo . Se seleccionaron seis hombres para la operación: un oficial ejecutivo como líder, dos médicos y tres operadores de radio . Los hombres se habían ofrecido como voluntarios para permanecer encerrados en la cueva si Gibraltar caía en manos de una potencia extranjera.

Los hombres comprendieron que permanecerían encerrados en la cueva durante aproximadamente un año, aunque podría ser mucho más tiempo, y se almacenaron provisiones para una estancia de siete años. El plan fue abortado y el Director de Inteligencia Naval ordenó que se distribuyeran las provisiones del complejo y que la cueva fuera sellada. Rumores de un complejo secreto, finalmente denominado Cueva Stay Behind , circularon durante décadas en Gibraltar, hasta que el Grupo de Espeleología de Gibraltar descubrió las cámaras en 1996.

La autenticidad del sitio fue confirmada por uno de los constructores en 1998 y una década después por uno de los médicos, el último miembro superviviente del equipo Tracer, quien falleció en 2010.
